About Camberwell Potteries Roofing
Making Melbourne roofs since the 1930s
Camberwell Potteries did not start out installing roofs. It started out making them.
The company was established in the mid-1930s as a manufacturer of terracotta roof tiles, from a works on Highbury Road in Burwood. Many of the terracotta roofs still standing across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs came out of that period. From the mid-1970s the business moved into distribution, supplying CSR Monier, Wunderlich, Boral Montoro and Nubrik tiles.
The current owners bought the company in 1987 and narrowed it to what it does now: re-roofing, restoration, repairs and major renovation work on tiled roofs. Camberwell Potteries Roofing has since grown into one of the largest re-roofing companies in Melbourne.
We are still in Burwood, a few streets from where the kilns were, and we still work on tiled roofs only — terracotta and concrete. No metal, no slate, no decramastic.
That focus is the point. Ninety years of working with the same material means we can usually identify a tile by its profile, tell you roughly when a roof was laid, and know what is likely to be underneath before we lift anything. We are an accredited CSR and Monier roofing specialist and a dual supplier of both Monier and Bristile tiles, so the tile is chosen to suit your roof rather than whichever brand we happen to stock.

Free Inspection
We get on the roof and look properly — pointing, tiles, valleys, flashings and, where we can reach it, the sarking. That is what decides between a repair, a restoration and a replacement.

We show you what we found and give you a written, obligation-free quote for the work your roof actually needs. If it is a repair rather than a replacement, we will say so.

The Work
Installed to the Australian Building Code and the manufacturer guides, which is what keeps your tile warranty intact. Site cleaned, gutters cleared, rubbish taken away.

Q. Are roof tiles suitable in colder areas?
Yes, concrete and terracotta roof tiles are impervious to frost and ice and are therefore ideal for those living in colder climates. Made from durable materials, they will never warp, no matter how cold it gets.

Q. Do roof tiles offer thermal insulation?
Yes. Concrete and terracotta are poor conductors of heat and cold. As a result, roof tiles provide improved insulation when compared to some other roofing materials. The colour of your roof will also affect its relevant thermal insulation performance.

Q. Can terracotta tiles be painted?
The painting of terracotta tiles is not recommended; however, unglazed terracotta tiles can be painted but once painted, they will require ongoing recoating.
