The trams built the Camberwell we work on
The original subdivision was generous blocks with fine Victorian and Edwardian houses on them, and the first mansions went up on the hilltops for the views and the air.
What filled in the rest was transport. Electric tram routes were established along Burke, Riversdale and Camberwell roads in 1916 and 1917, the train lines were electrified in 1916, and the Outer Circle branch from East Camberwell to Ashburton reopened. New estates followed through south Camberwell, middle Camberwell and Hartwell, and Burke Road boomed through the 1920s.
The house that filled those estates was the Californian bungalow — the characteristic housing style of the area. And Camberwell council had by then mandated brick for many precincts under its own bye-laws.
Brick walls and a terracotta roof, built out through the 1910s, 20s and 30s. That is the Camberwell house, and those were exactly the decades Camberwell Potteries was firing terracotta roof tiles.
What that means when your roof needs work
A Camberwell bungalow roof is typically Marseille-pattern terracotta, now ninety to a hundred years old. At that age the tiles themselves are very often still sound. What has reached the end of its life is everything holding them down.
The profiles are long out of production, so matching is the question that decides the job. Where your pattern is still made we can match it exactly. Where it is not, the options are a close-match current tile, or relocating sound tiles from a hidden elevation to the street front and putting the new ones where nobody looks.
On a bungalow with a prominent street-facing gable, that second option is very often the right answer.
Heritage precincts, and the Prospect Hill question
Large parts of Camberwell sit under Boroondara’s heritage overlay. The Prospect Hill Precinct — including the former Tara Estate, developed from 1890 — is described by council as Camberwell’s most intact and distinguished concentration of Victorian and Edwardian building stock, and one of the most homogenous estates of its type in Melbourne.
In a precinct like that the visible roof matters, and the rule is consistent: replacing like with like attracts far less scrutiny than changing material or profile. A Camberwell job we did
On Cooloongatta Road the original tiled roof had reached the end of its serviceable life. We replaced it in CSR Monier Earth Marseille terracotta over eight working days, along with all new chimney flashings, repairs to the timber fascia and scotia before the tiles went on, and a completely new flat-deck section. We organised the scaffolding, so the owner had one point of contact for the whole job. See the project.
What usually fails first here
Ridge and gable pointing. On a bungalow roof that has never been repointed the mortar cracks and drops out. On its own it is a repair, not a new roof.
Valley irons, rusting under leaf litter from Camberwell’s mature street trees.
Flashings around chimneys — and the brick bye-laws mean these houses have real chimneys, not decorative ones.
Sarking at the end of its life. On a roof approaching a century old this is a genuine possibility, and it is the one fault a restoration cannot fix. We will tell you if we find it rather than coating over it.

Is the company actually from Camberwell?
The name has been on the business since the 1930s and this has always been home ground, though the tile works itself was on Highbury Road in Burwood, and the workshop and showroom are still in Burwood today. Most of our work has always been in and around Camberwell.
Can you match the terracotta on a Californian bungalow?
Usually to a close match rather than an exact one, because the original profiles are largely out of production. We hold both Monier and Bristile and know which current tile sits closest. Where nothing is close enough, relocating sound tiles to the street-facing gable and putting new tiles at the rear is often the better answer.
My roof is a hundred years old. Does it need replacing?
Not on age alone. Terracotta of that vintage is frequently still sound. What has usually reached the end of its life is the pointing, the valley irons and possibly the sarking underneath. We inspect before quoting and tell you which applies.
My house is in a heritage precinct. What can I do?
Like-for-like replacement attracts far less scrutiny than changing material or profile. Large parts of Camberwell are covered, including the Prospect Hill Precinct. We can tell you what is likely to be acceptable before you apply, though we are not planning consultants.
How do I know whether my tiles are terracotta or concrete?
Terracotta has its colour fired through the clay, so a chip shows the same colour underneath. Concrete is coated, so a chip shows grey. That difference decides whether recoating is appropriate at all.
How long does the work take?
A straightforward repair is often an hour. Re-bedding and repointing is generally a day. A full restoration runs to two or three days. A complete re-roof is one to two weeks — the Cooloongatta Road job was eight working days including fascia repairs and a flat-deck section.
