Pergola, Patio and Carport Roofing Melbourne
We tile roofs on pergolas, patios, carports, verandahs and outbuildings so they match the house — not so they look like something bolted on afterwards.
This is work most roofers will not quote. It is small, fiddly, and the tiles have to match a roof that may be sixty or ninety years old. We supply both Monier and Bristile and we have been on Melbourne tiled roofs since the 1930s, so matching an existing profile is the part we are actually good at.
What we roof
Pergolas and verandahs. A tiled pergola roof reads as part of the house rather than an addition. It also gives you a properly waterproof outdoor room instead of a polycarbonate sheet that drums in the rain and yellows in five years.
Carports. Tiled to match the house roof, with the same pointing and flashing detail. If the carport abuts the house, the flashing where the two meet is where these jobs usually fail, and it is the part we take most care over.
Patios and alfresco areas. Often an extension of an existing roofline, which means matching pitch as well as tile.
Garages, sheds and outbuildings. Including re-roofing an old outbuilding whose tiles are past saving.
Matching an older roof
This is the whole job, and it is why the work is worth doing properly.
Melbourne’s tiled roofs came in waves. Marseille-pattern terracotta through the Federation and Edwardian years. Wunderlich and early Monier terracotta between the wars. Concrete tile almost everywhere from the 1950s on. A pergola tiled in the wrong profile is obvious from the street even to someone who knows nothing about roofs.
We hold both brands and we know which current profiles sit closest to the older patterns. Where nothing current matches, we will say so before you commit rather than after.
Structure comes first
Tile is heavier than sheet. A pergola framed for polycarbonate will not carry a tiled roof without the frame being upgraded, and that is not something to find out halfway through.
We look at the frame at the inspection and tell you what it needs. If the structure is not up to it, we will tell you that too — we would rather lose the job than put a tiled roof on a frame that cannot hold it.
Permits and boundaries
A pergola or carport can need a building permit depending on its size, height, and how close it sits to a boundary. Heritage overlay adds another layer, and much of Boroondara sits under one.
We are not a permit service, but we have been doing this in these suburbs long enough to tell you when you are likely to need one, and we will not start work that should have been permitted. See our guide to roofing permits in Melbourne.
Terracotta or concrete on a pergola
Usually you match the house, and that decides it. Where the house roof is being replaced at the same time, you have a real choice — see terracotta and concrete roof tiles, or the comparison.
One practical point: on a low-pitched pergola roof, tile choice and pitch interact. Some profiles are not rated below a certain pitch. We check that rather than assume.
Doing it alongside other work
If the house roof is due for re-roofing or restoration, do the pergola or carport at the same time. Same crew, same scaffold, same tile batch — which is the only way to guarantee a genuine colour match, since batches vary.
Where we work
All of Melbourne from our base in Burwood, with most of this work through Burwood, Box Hill, Blackburn, Vermont, Ringwood, Camberwell, Glen Iris and the surrounding eastern suburbs. See our service areas.
Tiled roofs only: terracotta and concrete. No metal, Colorbond, polycarbonate or slate.

WHAT MATTERS
Getting a pergola roof right
Three things decide whether it looks like part of the house or like an afterthought.
-
Matched to the house
The whole point of a tiled pergola or carport roof. We supply both Monier and Bristile, so the tile suits your roof rather than whichever brand we happen to stock.
-
We check the frame first
Tile is heavier than sheet. A frame built for polycarbonate needs upgrading, and we tell you that at the inspection rather than halfway through.
-
The flashing where it meets the house
Where a carport or pergola abuts the house is where these jobs usually leak. It is the detail we take most care over.
-
Pests
Many people face small pests crawling into their space. All they need is a small crack to enter. It is something that requires immediate attention from the roofing experts.
There were common signs that your home needs solar roof vents or others to keep it safe from future damages and cost you a big amount.

The Camberwell roofing professionals ensure vents are placed properly to keep your property safe. Once installed, we will check its progress to provide good insulation and proper ventilation.
It is vital to understand that ventilated roof ensures a healthy climate throughout the whole place. It helps in fighting the moisture and prevents from damaging the roof.

Frequently asked questions
Can you tile a pergola that was built for polycarbonate?
Only if the frame is upgraded first. Tile is considerably heavier than sheet, and a frame sized for polycarbonate will not carry it. We assess the frame at the inspection and tell you what it needs before quoting.
Will the tiles match my existing roof?
Usually yes, and it is the main reason people call us for this work. We supply both Monier and Bristile and know which current profiles sit closest to older patterns. On a very old or unusual profile we will tell you honestly how close we can get before you commit.
Do I need a permit for a pergola or carport?
It depends on size, height and how close it is to a boundary, and heritage overlay adds another layer. We are not a permit service but we will tell you when you are likely to need one, and we will not start work that should have been permitted.
How much does a tiled pergola roof cost?
It depends on the area, the pitch, whether the frame needs work, and which tile matches your house. We quote in writing after looking at it rather than over the phone, and the inspection is free.
Is a tiled roof better than Colorbond on a carport?
For matching a tiled house, yes — it reads as part of the building rather than an addition, and it is quieter in rain. If you want metal, we are not your roofer: we work on terracotta and concrete tile only.
Can you do the pergola at the same time as the house roof?
Yes, and it is the better way. Same crew, same scaffold, and critically the same tile batch — batches vary in colour, so doing both together is the only way to guarantee a genuine match.
How long does a pergola or carport roof take?
Most are a few days once any frame work is done. Because it involves tiling we watch the weather rather than the diary.
Looking for a tiled pergola, patio or carport roof?
Whether you are adding a pergola, roofing a new carport, or tiling an outbuilding to match the house, we will look at it and tell you what it needs — including whether the frame will carry a tiled roof.

What can we say but, THANK YOU Camberwell Potteries Roofing! We were reticent to undertake such a large job, but our roof tiles were old and therefore crumbling. Three different households in our street in Glen Iris had their roof restorations done by Camberwell Potteries Roofing, and had nothing but praise for their professionalism, ethics and respect throughout the job, which has taken less than 2 weeks. We are the fourth in our street to recommend this company. We are very happy with our new roof! Thank you again to all the crew!![]()

Camberwell Potteries Roofing were absolutely amazing. Glen and his team couldn't have been more helpful. Our house being very old and in desperate need of repair had its challenges. Expert roof replacement with excellent customer service and outstanding workmanship for an unbeatable price! I highly recommend Glenn and his team for their friendly professional approach when it came to replacing a large roof on our commercial property. I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome! From start to finish the experience was smooth and professional achieving a quality finish. This substantial job came with issues such as difficult access, and much pressure from neighbouring businesses and was performed during a rainy and windy week. However Glenn and his team from Camberwell Potteries Roofing happily worked through this and achieved the final finished roof (including vacuuming and new insulation in the ceiling) within the timeframe that was promised. The team of roofers arrived on time and quickly got to work. Their efficiency was impressive and their skill and experience was evident. I would not hesitate to use this company again and I cannot recommend them highly enough! The roof looks amazing!![]()
