Gutters, Fascia and Downpipes Melbourne
Guttering, fascia and downpipes on tiled roofs — replaced properly, and usually as part of looking after the roof rather than as a job on its own.
We are roof tilers. Gutters, fascia and downpipes are the parts of a tiled roof that carry the water away, and when they fail they do damage that shows up inside the house long before anyone looks up. So we replace them, and we do it while we are on the roof anyway.
What we do
Gutter replacement. Where the gutter has rusted through, sagged, or been installed with too little fall to drain properly.
Fascia replacement. The board the gutter fixes to. Once water has been sitting behind a failed gutter, the fascia is often rotten, and there is no point hanging a new gutter on a rotten board.
Downpipes. Replacement, repositioning, and adding downpipes where there are too few for the roof area — which is a common cause of gutters overflowing in heavy rain even when they are clean.
Why gutters fail on a tiled roof
Three causes, and only one of them is leaves.
Fall. A gutter needs a consistent slope toward the downpipe. Where there is not enough, water sits, and standing water rusts a gutter from the inside out. Sagging brackets create the same problem in an otherwise sound gutter.
Not enough downpipes. A long run of gutter with a single outlet will overflow in a downpour no matter how clean it is. People clear the gutter, it overflows again, and they conclude the gutter is the problem.
Debris. Real, particularly under the established elms, oaks and plane trees across the eastern suburbs. But it is usually the symptom people notice rather than the underlying fault.
Why we do not fit leaf guards
We get asked about them often, and our answer is that we do not fit them.
They stop the leaves you can see and trap the finer debris you cannot, which then sits against the gutter and holds moisture. They also make the gutter far harder to clear properly — the guard has to come off first, so in practice it does not get done. On a roof under large deciduous trees we would rather clear the gutters properly than sell you something that makes clearing them harder.
If you want them fitted, we are not the right people, and we will say so rather than fit something we do not believe in.
Do it with the roof
Gutter and fascia work is considerably cheaper while we are already on the roof with scaffolding up. If your roof is due for re-roofing or restoration, do the guttering at the same time.
It is also the point at which we can see whether the problem is the gutter or the roof above it. Water marks on a fascia sometimes mean a failed valley or flashing rather than a failed gutter, and replacing the gutter would not have fixed it. That is what the inspection is for.
Gutters are also checked as part of routine roof maintenance.
Where we work
Across Melbourne from Burwood, most often through the eastern, south-eastern and bayside suburbs. See our service areas.
We work on tiled roofs: terracotta and concrete. We do not re-roof in metal, Colorbond, polycarbonate or slate.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Signs your guttering needs work
Only one of these is about leaves.
-
Overflowing when it rains
Often not blockage at all. Usually too little fall toward the downpipe, or too few downpipes for the roof area.
-
Rust marks and staining
Standing water rusts a gutter from the inside out. Staining down the fascia or the wall below is the tell.
-
Soft or rotten fascia
Where water has sat behind a failed gutter, the board it fixes to often goes. A new gutter on a rotten fascia will not last.
-
Pests
Many people face small pests crawling into their space. All they need is a small crack to enter. It is something that requires immediate attention from the roofing experts.
There were common signs that your home needs solar roof vents or others to keep it safe from future damages and cost you a big amount.
WHY US
Why have a roof tiler do the gutters
We are on the roof anyway
We are on the roof anyway
Gutter and fascia work costs considerably less alongside a re-roof or restoration, because the access and scaffolding are already up.
We find the actual fault
We find the actual fault
Water marks on a fascia can mean a failed valley or flashing above. Replacing the gutter would not have fixed it.
No leaf guards
No leaf guards
We do not fit them. They trap fine debris and make proper clearing harder. We would rather clear the gutters properly.
Fall and downpipe count
Fall and downpipe count
The two faults nobody checks. We measure the fall and work out whether the roof area has enough outlets.
5. Maintenance
5. Maintenance
The Camberwell roofing professionals ensure vents are placed properly to keep your property safe. Once installed, we will check its progress to provide good insulation and proper ventilation.
It is vital to understand that ventilated roof ensures a healthy climate throughout the whole place. It helps in fighting the moisture and prevents from damaging the roof.

Frequently asked questions
Do you fit leaf guards or gutter mesh?
No. They stop the leaves you can see and trap the finer debris you cannot, which holds moisture against the gutter, and they make proper clearing harder because the guard has to come off first. Under large deciduous trees we would rather clear the gutters properly. If you want them fitted, we are not the right people.
My gutters overflow even though they are clean. Why?
Usually not enough fall toward the downpipe, or not enough downpipes for the roof area. A long run of gutter with one outlet will overflow in a downpour however clean it is. Both are fixable, and neither is solved by clearing the gutter again.
Do I need to replace the fascia as well as the gutter?
Often, yes. Once water has been sitting behind a failed gutter the fascia behind it is frequently rotten, and there is no point hanging a new gutter on a rotten board. We will tell you at the inspection which you actually need.
Can you do guttering without doing the roof?
Yes. But it is considerably cheaper alongside a re-roof or restoration, because the access and scaffolding are already there.
Is the problem the gutter or the roof?
Worth establishing before spending anything. Water marks on a fascia can mean a failed valley or flashing above rather than a failed gutter, in which case replacing the gutter would not have fixed it. That is what the free inspection is for.
How often should gutters be cleared?
Under established elms, oaks or plane trees, at least twice a year and ideally after autumn. On an open block with little overhang, once a year is usually enough.
Gutters overflowing or fascia gone soft?
If your gutters are overflowing, sagging or rusting, or the fascia has gone soft, we will look at it and tell you whether the fault is the gutter or the roof above it.

What can we say but, THANK YOU Camberwell Potteries Roofing! We were reticent to undertake such a large job, but our roof tiles were old and therefore crumbling. Three different households in our street in Glen Iris had their roof restorations done by Camberwell Potteries Roofing, and had nothing but praise for their professionalism, ethics and respect throughout the job, which has taken less than 2 weeks. We are the fourth in our street to recommend this company. We are very happy with our new roof! Thank you again to all the crew!![]()

Expert roof replacement with excellent customer service and outstanding workmanship for an unbeatable price! I highly recommend Glenn and his team for their friendly professional approach when it came to replacing a large roof on our commercial property. I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome! From start to finish the experience was smooth and professional achieving a quality finish. This substantial job came with issues such as difficult access, and much pressure from neighbouring businesses and was performed during a rainy and windy week. However Glenn and his team from Camberwell Potteries Roofing happily worked through this and achieved the final finished roof (including vacuuming and new insulation in the ceiling) within the timeframe that was promised. The team of roofers arrived on time and quickly got to work. Their efficiency was impressive and their skill and experience was evident. I would not hesitate to use this company again and I cannot recommend them highly enough! The roof looks amazing!![]()
