The name comes from the land itself. The ground rises from a deep valley to the south, and that rise was pronounced enough to earn the suburb its name in the 1850s.
Sloped ground means a few things for a roof. Sites are less uniform than the flat streets further east, more houses are split-level or two-storey on the fall, and scaffolding a roof on a sloping block takes longer to set up safely. Any quote that ignores the slope is a quote that will change later.

The suburb is shaped by its creek corridors. Damper Creek runs through a bushland reserve north of the station. Scotchmans Creek rises near Pinewood and runs south-west through a linear reserve, and the Waverley Road retarding basin has been holding back stormwater there since the early 1960s. The whole area is built around moving water away from houses.
Your roof is the first part of that system. Gutters, downpipes and valleys on a sloping site carry water faster and in greater volume than they do on flat ground, and when they are blocked or undersized the water finds another route — usually under the tiles at the eaves, or over the back of a gutter into the wall cavity.

Surface coating on concrete tiles, which chalks and fades while the tile stays sound.

Frequently asked questions
Water goes over the back of my gutter in heavy rain. Is that a roof problem?
Usually yes, and it is common here. On sloping sites gutters carry water faster and in greater volume. If the fall is wrong, the downpipe is blocked or the gutter is full, water backs up and goes over the rear edge into the wall cavity rather than out the front. It is worth fixing early because it damages the structure, not just the finish.
Does the slope of my block affect the price?
It can. Sloping and split-level sites take longer to scaffold safely than a flat single-storey block, and access is one of the biggest variables in any roofing quote. We would rather include it up front than revise the price later.
My roof is 1960s concrete tile. Restore or replace?
Almost always restore, if the structure is sound. The colour is a surface coating that chalks and washes off long before the tile loses strength. A clean, repoint and recoat gets you a roof that looks new for a fraction of a replacement.
Why do you check the gutters and downpipes on a roof quote?
Because in this part of Melbourne they are frequently the actual fault. A stain on a ceiling often turns out to be drainage rather than a cracked tile, and replacing tiles would not have fixed it.
How long does the work take?
A straightforward repair is often an hour. Re-bedding and repointing is generally a day. A full restoration with pointing and coating runs to two or three days. A complete re-roof is one to two weeks, depending on size, pitch and access.
